How often do you take breaks? In my journey as a creative, I've come to realise that our minds work best in a relaxed state. We can work under pressure this is true, but there is something to be said about the elasticity of thought when it is not burdened by expectation. Creativity often manifests when we give in to the universe. It's as if our minds are just waiting for us to let go of the reigns in order to use their full computing power.
Archimedes is claimed to have interjected "Eureka" while in the bathtub as he discovered his principles of buoyancy and displacement of fluids. If he hadn't have taken that break, he may have remained in his office slaving away at some equations that were going nowhere. I think about that a lot. Maybe our lack of breaks is affecting our productivity?
I remember one of my first programming lectures in uni, my lecturer said: "We'll take a break in an hour and a half because no normal person should be expected to concentrate for that long without a break." At work, you're expected to function all day for months on end, now while we may do this just fine, how much creativity is lost? how many ideas were lost to "productivity".
We've been convinced that not working constantly is a sign of laziness, but the smartest people I know spend a lot of time just thinking. In their offices, rooms, cars, wherever. They always take the time to let their minds wander, a bit like walking your dog (Or other pet of preference).
Take a break. Remember that work will always be there. It may not be practical to walk away from your screen or desk, but let your mind wander from time to time, allow yourself to imagine, create with your mind, explore, daydream. You never know what you'll discover in there. Be safe and be well!
